Music video Analysis

By analysing music videos which have a structure of what I want to achieve, it helps me pick up new ideas and think of how I can implement them throughout my project.

Narrative: As we are used to seeing in this genre and with the lyrics having a depressed meaning, the narrative and the lyrics of the song are accompanied by the music video, widening the meaning of these and therefore creating a connection between the artist “Anuel AA” and the audience. 

This is reinforced throughout the clip as we can follow the narrative of him crashing his car and feeling more pain from the heartbreak than from the car crash. 

The video starts with shots of the car crash and later on, it explains why and how it has occured gaining the audience's attention making them want to know more about the event. 

The video alters between the narrative and a performance of Anuel AA singing and dancing the song. 

Representation:

- Gender: As the protagonist of the video is the male artist “Anuel AA”, most of the clip is of men representation. Additionally, we can appreciate him having a discussion with a woman meaning that it can also represent females and all the people who suffer from heartbreak.

- Ethnicity: As the use of active characters is very limited counting only with Anuel AA and the women, being both from Puerto RIco, we can only observe the representation of white race.  

- Class: As the word in the title of the song “Ferrari” indicates, it already connotes wealth and luxury, giving a hint to the audience of what the music clip is going to be about. Throughout most of the clip, we can remark the use of a typical red ferrari which already specifies the type of class which is represented which is the high class. 

 

- Age: It could be argued that the clip is a representation of adults as both of the characters have a noticeable age and they can drive meaning that they are already more than 18. 

Editing: 

The visual representation of “Llorando en un ferrari” is a montage due to the fact that it enables the director to communicate a vast amont of information to the audience in a relatively short period of time. 

Furthermore, the use of ellipses is seen as the movement and action unnecessary  to the telling of a story will be often removed by editing such as the arrival of Anuel to the party or the fact that we cannot see the whole discussion or the complete car crash. 

Lastly, the video is accompanied by the beat of the song as the change of shot tends to coincide with the beat. 

Cinematography:

The average duration of time of each shot in “Llorando en un ferrari” is approximately of 3 seconds and most of them are at eye-level with many of them being close ups as it helps the director to transmit his feelings by face gestures. However, the director also tries to experiment with uncommon seen angles in music videos such as low angle. Lastly, high angle shots are also predominant throughout the duration of the clip as it shows the car and its surroundings. 

MISE-EN-SCENE:

The lightning of the clip is dominated by low lightning and an unsaturated colour palette connoting depression, sadness and cold hearted feelings. The performance of Anuel AA is of a person who is desperate, shown by his facial gestures. The props and the make-up used in this clip also helps to create a meaning as we can see blood all over the actor, alcoholic drinks and pieces of glass in the floor which adds tension to the fight that occurred in the clip.
