3 categories of music videos

3 categories of music videos

The main reasons in which I decided to research the 3 different categories music videos have and further analyze examples of them, is with the finality to inspire myself when creating my storyboard and planning my shooting schedule as I would like to make them as precise as possible in order to facilitate the process of recording the video.

As mentioned in my pitch idea post among many others, I would like to combine both a performance and a narrative making the video more entertaining and interactive with the audience.

Here is some of the analysis that I have come up with:

Performance based videos:

These types of videos show the artist or an actor performing. Performing is to present (a form of entertainment) to the audience. A famous technique used by singers is “Lip-singing” where the audience can appreciate them following the rhythm of the song while they are moving or dancing. As the performance videos are not as elaborate as the other types, it is usually accompanied by a cool setting or frequent cuts in order to entertain the audience. Furthermore, performance based videos are composed by more than one actor, in the reggaeton genre, (it is common to see women with the actor).

Examples of the performance based videos are:

Fumeteo remix by Feid, Eladio Carrion and Mora

Volando remix by Mora, Sech and Bad Bunny

Jovenes millonarios by Eladio Carrion and Myke towers

Narrative based videos:

These types of videos are known to be the most popular and entertaining, as are the most similar to watching a short film of your favorite singer. They usually start with a rapid introduction and then is followed by the development of it and later on finishing with an end. They are usually linked to the meaning and rhythm of the lyrics but can in some cases be completely random. This might firstly be interpreted by the artist himself, but can also also be played by professional actors. A purely narrative music video would have no performance and would follow a story.

Examples of narrative videos are:

Yonaguni by Bad bunny

Una vez by Mora and Bad bunny

Mi error remix by Eladio Carrion, Lunay, Zion…

Concept based:

Lastly, another type of music video is based on an idea or a concept. It usually combines all of the characteristics of the song and can sometimes result in confusion among the audience and doesnt follow a narrative. It can gain a high number of views due to its unpredictability and engaging the audience with the “what will happen”.
